A The frequency of periodic monitoring can be reduced (or discontinued if below the Action Level) when two consecutive measurements, taken at least seven days apart, indicate reduced exposure to a lower level below the threshold where monitoring is required (PEL or Action level). Additional monitoring should be conducted in any area where lead is used whenever there has been a production, process, control or personnel change which may result in new or additional exposure to lead, or when new or additional exposure is suspected.

B When airborne exposures exceed the PEL-TWA, the written notification to the exposed employee should include a statement indicating the PEL was exceeded and a description of corrective action taken or planned to reduce exposure to or below the PEL.

C Employees required to wear respirators or who voluntarily use tight fitting respirators should be included in a Respiratory Protection Program that as a minimum, meets requirements in 1910.134.

D If mechanical ventilation is used to control lead exposure, the effectiveness of that system should be measured every 3-months or within 5 days of any change in production, process or control which might result in a change in employee exposure to lead.

E If air from exhaust ventilation is re-circulated into the workplace, the employer shall assure that (A) the system has a high efficiency filter with reliable back-up filter; and (B) controls to monitor the concentration of lead in return air and to bypass the re-circulation system automatically if it fails are installed, operated and maintained. Due to the toxicity of lead, re-circulation of exhaust air is not recommended. If exhaust air is re-circulated, the required filters, monitor and bypass damper should be added.

F Your company physician or corporate medical staff should be consulted on legal requirements for medical surveillance of lead.
